JW Insights: R&D expenses of 205 listed Chinese semiconductor companies total RMB52.6 billion ($7.22 billion) in the first three quarters of 2023

(JW Insights) Nov 6 -- The R&D expenditures of 205 A-share listed Chinese semiconductor companies totaled RMB52.6 billion ($7.22 billion) in the first three quarters of 2023, according to the latest JW Insights' listed company rankings.

The average R&D investment of those 205 companies was RMB256 million ($35.16 million) in the first three quarters of 2023.

There were ten companies with R&D expenditures exceeding RMB1 billion ($137.29 million), accounting for 4.88% of all companies.

Wingtech Technology topped all companies in R&D expenses during the time with RMB2.34 billion ($321.37 million), followed by Will Semiconductor RMB1.562 billion ($214.45 million), Naura Technology RMB1.389 billion ($190.70 million), Ninestar RMB1.295 billion ($179.86 million) and Hygon Information RMB1.279 Billion (177.64 million). The other five are USI, The other five are NavInfo, JCET, Guoxin Micro, and SMEC, all exceeding RMB1 billion ($137.29 million).

There were 20 companies with R&D expenditures between RMB500 million ($68.67 million) and RMB1 billion ($137.29 million), including Amlogic, CR Micro, Tongfu Microelectronics, JSG, ASR, Goodix, Nexchip, Fudan Microelectronics, GigaDevice, Cambricon, Truchum Advanced Materials & Technology, VeriSilicon, Taiji Industry, GalaxyCore, Silan Micro, SG Micro, Changchuan Technology, Sanan Optoelectronics, Ingenic, and AMEC.

Twenty-four companies invested between RMB300 million ($41.19 million) and RMB500 million ($68.67 million) in R&D, and 21 companies spent between RMB200 million ($27.46 million) and RMB300 million ($41.19 million) in R&D during the first three quarters of 2023, said the JW Insights report.

The total revenue of the 205 companies was RMB558.963 billion ($76.74 billion) during the time, with an overall R&D expense rate (the percentage of R&D expenditures in operating income) of 9.4%. Cambricon's R&D expense ratio is as high as 492.01%, far exceeding that of others.

Other twelve companies were with an R&D expense ratio of more than 50%, including Motorcomm, Intellifusion, CloudWalk, Loongson Technology, Primarius, Smarter Micro, Semitronix, SDIC Micro, Anlogic Infotech, NavInfo, Great Microwave, and Jingjia Micro.

There were ten companies with R&D expense ratios between 40% and 50%, namely, Novosense, Chipsea Technology, NationalChip, 3Peak, ASR, Halo Microelectronics, Changchuan Technology, Beken Corporation, CellWise Microelectronics, and VeriSillicon, said the JW Insights report.
